Using a rough gemstone in wire jewelry really adds to the uniqueness of the piece. Natural beauty is found in any gem stone, but the swirls of wire tend to enhance rather than conflict with a rough stone – making the piece noteworthy.
Directions for this Tutorial:
You’ll need these supplies:
- approx 10-inches 20 gauge wire; silver or gold-fill
- rough gemstone, this is aquamarine; drilled
You’ll need these tools:
- wire cutters; flush cutters
- Round nose pliers
- Bent nose or chain nose pliers
- Anvil
- Hammer
- Ring mandrel
- File
1. Be sure that both ends of your wire are cut with flush cutters.
2. Center your bead and place the wired bead on the ring mandrel at the spot of one size larger than you want the ring.
3. Wrap around the mandrel once and come up on each side of the bead. Cross the wire behind the bead.
4. Go underneath two wires of the ring and come up – effectively making a looped figure eight around the two wires of the ring. Leave room for other loops to be nearer to the bead.
5. Repeat this step on each side, coming closer to the bead with each loop side. Continue to repeat that step for 5 loops.
6. Trim and tuck the end when you come up from making the last loop inside the other loops.
7. Tap on the anvil using your hammer to harden.
