The nine patch is another classic or basic quilt block that is used in many quilts and quilt block variations. There is a fun two fabric nine patch block, when put together looks like criss cross diagonal design. I’ll show you the blocks for that as well.
Cut the Nine Patch Quilt Block pieces.
My sample is of nine 2 1/2 inch fabric patches from my stash that I cut when working on other items. I love the scrappy look, so here is what that amounts to in the nine patch. When I play with my 2 1/2 inch square fabric pieces, I don’t worry about anything if it is directional or not. But I do try and find colors and textures that look good together. They fit well in sandwich and snack baggies and you can trade them with guild members or in online swaps. It makes a 6-inch square(6 1/2 unfinished) for a nine patch.
Variation Cutting Nine Patch Quilt Block with Two Fabrics.
If you want to make a quit that looks like you are criss-crossing the fabric patches, there is a simpler way to cut it out and put it together – I mean who wants to cut all of those little squares! You make strips of the fabrics and sew them together, then cut into sets. Shown in the image below.
Putting together the Scrappy Nine Patch Quilt Block.
- Layout the fabric squares as shown in the image.
- Sew the first two squares in a row together. Add the 3rd square.
- Iron the squares open, seams toward the outside in rows 1 & 3. Seams going in for row 2.
- Lock seams together, pin. Sew the rows.
- Enjoy!
The Math for Nine Patch Quilt Blocks
The math for your nine patch quilt blocks is super simple! Add 1/2 inch to each square(remember squares are equal on all sides) for finished size blocks that are multiplied by three to the patch. So:
- 2 1/2 inch square = 6 inch block(6 1/2 inch unfinished)
- 3 1/2 inch square = 9 inch block(9 1/2 inch unfinished)
- 4 1/2 inch square = 12 inch block(12 1/2 inch unfinished)
