Wire wrapping a coil clasp for a jewelry project will give it just the right touch. These clasps are perfect for heavier wire wrapped pieces and are perfect clasps for multi-strand jewelry projects.
You’ll need these supplies:
- 18 gauge wire; 6 inches
- 22 gauge wire 12 inches
You’ll need these tools:
- Bent nose or chain nose plyers
- round nose pliers
- wire cutters
Directions for the Tutorial:
1.) Cut a two-inch piece of 18 gauge wire. Bend both sides at a 90 degree angle. Coil 12-inch piece of 22 gauge wire around the center of the 18 gauge wire.
2.) Loop both ends. To finish this side of the wire clasp, bend around a highlighter or other round object.(see top of page image) You can close the two loops together for a heavy one strand clasp or leave spaced apart for a multi-strand clasp.
3.) To make the hook part of the clasp, cut a piece of 4 inch 18 gauge wire, then bend the wire in half at the center.
4.) Bend the tip where the center was so that it looks like the picture.
5.) Create the hook using the base of your round nose pliers about 3/4 to an inch down the wire.
6.) Make your eye loops according to the jewelry piece you are making the clasp for: to the sides for multi-strand jewelry, at the bottom for heavier pieces.(see finished hooks in the pictures at the top.)
