1.) Gather your supplies.
To make this ugly doll you will need:
- One sleeve of an old sweater; soft to touch
- Felt face pieces
- Embroidery floss
- Needle
- Sewing machine and thread
- Pillow filling
2.) Cut out the shape of your doll.
Turn the old sweater you plan to use to make your ugly doll inside-out. Cut a pointed head shape about 14 inches up from the edge of the sleeve by tracing a moon shape on the sleeve first – using a lid from a coffee can or something similar – then create a point in the center. Cut it out with a sharp pair of scissors.
3.) Stitch the top of the ugly doll’s head.
Keeping the doll inside out, pin together the top sides and stitch with a sewing machine.
4.) Stitch the felt pieces for the ugly doll’s face.
Using embroidery floss and a needle, stitch together the felt pieces of the ugly doll’s face as shown in the picture.
5.) Stitch on the face.
Turn the sleeve right-side-out. Stitch on your ugly doll’s face to the front side of the doll by placing your hand on the inside. Be careful not to poke your hand with the needle.
Stitch on the tongue first and then cover the stitching with the mouth. Use darker thread to stitch on the mouth. Whip stitch the white felt brow to the doll shape after you have attach the eyes to it.
6.) Stuff your doll.
Stuff your doll, shaping it as you go until it is huggable. Stitch up the bottom of the doll with a whip stitch.
7.) Variations for your ugly doll.
Ugly dolls can be made in many shapes. You can vary the materials, flannel is another good body material if you are looking to make another recycled doll. You can also use liquid stitch for attaching the face pieces, but I don’t recommend it for sealing the edge.
